There baby silicone tableware In just a few years, it has established itself as a must-have for little ones’ mealtimes. Suction-cup plates, bowls, spoons, and bavoirs with a spout: these food-grade silicone accessories really do make a difference to mealtimes. But how do you choose, and why has silicone become the go-to material? We’ll explain it all. 🍽️
🔍 Why choose silicone tableware for babies?
Food-grade silicone offers several decisive advantages over traditional alternatives (plastic, melamine, glass):
- BPA-free, phthalate-free, bisphenol A-free — certified food-grade silicone is inert: it does not release any chemical substances into food, even when hot
- Unbreakable — no risk of dangerous breakage, unlike glass or ceramic
- Supple and soft - does not hurt baby's fragile gums, even without teeth
- Temperature resistant — dishwasher, microwave and freezer safe depending on the model
- Non-slip the suction cups on the plates keep the tableware on the table, even when baby pushes and bangs
- Easy to clean - no nooks and crannies, smooth surface, no porosity that traps bacteria
🍜 What silicone dishwashing accessories are essential?
The sectioned suction plate
This is THE essential silicone baby tableware piece. The suction base keeps the plate firmly stuck to the table or high chair — baby can push, bang, or twist: the plate won't budge. The compartments keep food separate, which is important for babies who don't like textures mixing — and for baby-led weaning (BLW), which requires presenting foods distinctly.
The suction bowl
For soups, purees and cereals. With an integrated suction cup, it stays stable while baby learns to use a spoon — a naturally very messy but essential phase for developing independence.
The ergonomic spoons
The silicone baby spoons have a soft head that does not hurt the gums, a short handle suited to small hands, and a curved shape that makes loading the spoon easier. From 6 months for the first purées, from 12 months for gradual independence.
The bib with a waterproof pocket
The silicone bib with a catch pocket is a game-changer: it catches everything that falls — and with a baby learning to feed themselves, a lot falls. It’s dishwasher-safe and dries in a matter of minutes. It’s far more hygienic and durable than fabric bibs.
The food feeder / mesh feeder
For first flavours and the teething phase: baby slips a piece of fruit or vegetable into the silicone net and nibbles freely. Ideal for introducing tastes safely from 4-5 months, without any risk of choking.
PetitMaxou offers a range of complete silicone tableware sets. Our complete silicone dining set combines a suction plate, bowl, spoons and bib in a single, coordinated set — ideal as a baby shower gift or for getting everything you need in one go.
⚠️ How to recognise food-grade silicone of good quality?
Not all silicones are the same. Here is how to tell a good product apart:
- FDA or LFGB certification (American and European standards for food contact materials) — check packaging
- Pinch test pinch the silicone and twist — if a white mark appears, the product contains fillers (silica, plastic) that can migrate. Pure silicone does not whiten
- No plastic smell — a good food-grade silicone has virtually no smell
- No filler — very low-end products dilute the silicone with fillers that reduce its safety
🧼 How to care for baby silicone tableware?
- Dishwasher Yes, for the vast majority of quality silicone products — preferably on the top rack
- Hand wash hot water + washing-up liquid are enough, rinse thoroughly
- Sterilisation : this can be done by steam sterilisation or boiling for spoons and bavoirs
- Storage flat or stacked — the silicone doesn't deform
- Replace if tears, lingering odours after washing, abnormal discolouration
🎁 Silicone baby tableware: the perfect newborn gift idea
A complete silicone tableware set is one of the most useful newborn gifts that we can give — and often one of the least thought of. Parents receive a lot of clothes and soft toys when a baby is born, but rarely the complete feeding equipment they will need from 4-6 months onwards.
Our baby crab meal set is perfect for that — comprehensive, attractive, ready to give in its packaging.
❓ FAQ — Baby silicone tableware
From what age should you use silicone baby tableware?
The teething dummy from 4–5 months. Spoons and bowls for spoon-fed purées from 5–6 months. The suction-base compartmentalised plate from the start of baby-led weaning (6 months) or as soon as your baby starts feeding themselves. The bib with a pocket from the start of weaning.
Is silicone really safe for baby?
Certified food-grade silicone (FDA/LFGB) is considered safe by European and American health authorities. It is inert, does not release chemicals into food, and is resistant to extreme temperatures. Today, it is the safest material for baby tableware.
Does the suction base of the plate stay effective on all surfaces?
The silicone suction pads adhere well to smooth and clean surfaces: varnished wooden tables, smooth highchair trays, glass or plastic tables. They are less effective on textured surfaces, untreated unvarnished wood, or surfaces covered with a plastic tablecloth. Make sure the surface is clean and dry before placing the plate.
Can silicone tableware be put in the microwave?
That depends on the product — always check the instructions. Most pure silicone parts are microwave safe, but some sets include parts with metal or plastic inserts that are incompatible. If in doubt, heat the food separately and then transfer.

🔬 Food-grade silicone and European regulations
In Europe, food-contact tableware is governed by EC Regulation No 1935/2004 and material-specific directives. To be legally marketed in the EU, food-grade silicone must comply with strict limits on the migration of substances into food. LFGB certification (a German standard and one of the strictest in Europe) goes even further than the simple CE mark. When buying silicone baby tableware, check for the presence of at least one of these certifications on the packaging — it is your best guarantee of safety.
