The comfort toy is often a baby’s first great love. Even before they can walk or talk, they become attached to it — and sometimes for years. The comfort toy is not just a toy. Psychologists call it a transitional object — a term coined by the paediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott in the 1950s. In practical terms, it is the object that helps a baby cope with separation from its parents: falling asleep alone, facing a new environment, and getting through stressful moments.
It represents both the reassuring presence of the parents and baby's growing independence. That is why it often smells of «baby» — the scent is part of its soothing power.
A comfort toy approach can be introduced from the very first weeks — but genuine bonding usually develops between 8 and 12 months. Before 6 months, an important safety rule: Never leave a comfort toy in bed whilst sleeping unsupervised. Any soft item in an infant's cot presents a suffocation risk.
This is the number one criterion. Opt for OEKO-TEX-certified organic cotton, velour or ultra-soft comfort toy fabric. Avoid materials that shed after washing and cheap dyes.
The ideal size for a comfort toy baby is between 20 and 35 cm. Flat doudous (head + square of fabric) are particularly popular: they’re lightweight and easy for little hands to grasp.
A comfort toy for a baby must be CE certified. Check for small detachable parts, strong seams, and hypoallergenic stuffing.
Rabbit, teddy bear, elephant, mouse: the classic animals are the safe bets. Avoid cartoon characters or very trendy models which can be impossible to replace.
Always check that it is machine washable at 30-40°C. It is best to air-dry them. Be wary of musical doudous, as their mechanisms cannot withstand washing.
This is the advice that all parents who have experienced the heartbreak of losing a comfort toy child take to heart: Buy two identical doudous right from the start. Alternate the two regularly so that they age at the same rate and acquire the same smell.
