Baby weaning: complete guide and practical advice.

Weaning is a key stage in a child's development, generally recommended from 4 to 6 months. It involves gradually introducing solid foods alongside breast milk or formula. Here are a few tips to help your baby through this discovery of flavours.

1. Respect the right timing

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends starting weaning between 4 and 6 months. Before this age, a baby's digestive system is not yet ready to assimilate anything other than milk. Waiting too long can also increase the risk of nutritional deficiencies.

Introduce one food at a time

To identify any potential allergies or intolerances, it is advisable to introduce a new food every 2 to 3 days. Start with mild vegetables such as carrot, courgette or sweet potato before suggest some fruit like the apple, the pear or the banana.

3. Prioritise suitable textures

At first, offer foods as smooth purées before gradually moving on to thicker textures, and then small pieces. Around 9-12 months, baby can start eating soft foods in small pieces, thereby encouraging the learning of chewing.

4. Varying tastes and preferences

The more a child is exposed to a wide variety of foods from a very young age, the more diverse their palate will develop. Offer them green and orange vegetables, fresh fruit and, from 6 months onwards, proteins such as well-cooked meat, fish or eggs.

5. Avoid salt and sugar

It is better not to add salt or sugar to baby's meals. Their palate is still new and it is important for them to discover the natural flavours of foods. Also avoid highly processed ready meals.

6. Observe and respect your appetite

Every baby has their own pace. It is essential to respect their appetite and not force a food if they refuse it. Offer it to them at another time, patience is key!

7. Establishing sociable mealtimes

Eating together as a family and in a serene atmosphere helps the child associate meals with a pleasant moment. They will be able to observe their parents and imitate their eating habits.

By following these tips, weaning will become a wonderful taste adventure for your child, allowing them to develop their palate and grow up healthy.
