Stacking cups: a timeless classic for early learning

Why this toy stands the test of time

Les stackable cups are one of the rare toys whose educational value is unanimously agreed upon by Montessori educators, paediatricians and parents. And for good reason: behind their apparent simplicity, they offer an extraordinary range of play possibilities that evolve with baby. At 6 months old, they are handled. At 12 months old, they are stacked. At 18 months old, they are nested. At 2-3 years old, they are used in the sand, in the water, as containers for pretend play.

One toy, dozens of games

The genius of stacking cups lies in their openness: no instructions, no right or wrong way to play. Baby invents their own rules, experiments, tries again. This absence of a rigid framework is precisely what paediatricians recommend to stimulate creativity and cognitive independence — far more effective than an electronic toy that dictates its own rules.

2 palettes to choose from depending on your style

Choosing between light and dark colours

Our set of stackable mugs comes in 2 colour palettes designed to suit different interiors:

  • Light colours - pastel, soft, luminous: perfect for bedrooms with neutral tones and cosy vibes
  • Dark colours - contrasting, deep: ideal for stimulating the eyesight of the very young (newborns see strong contrasts better) and for bedrooms with contemporary palettes

Tip: for babies under 6 months, contrasting dark colours are more visually stimulating. For older children (12 months+), light colours are soothing and suitable for prolonged use.

Skills developed

Fine motor skills and coordination

Grasping a cup, orienting it, stacking it precisely on another, not dropping it: all these actions require hand-eye coordination and motor precision. These are the foundations that will later prepare for complex actions — using a spoon, drawing, writing.

Concept of size and sequence

The cups are of different sizes — baby is gradually learning to sort them from largest to smallest. It's an opportunity to introduce the vocabulary «big/small», «bigger/smaller», and to lay the early foundations of logical and mathematical thinking.

Cause and effect and object permanence

Around 6-9 months, baby loves putting a small cup inside a large one, then pulling it out. This simple mechanic stimulates their understanding of object permanence (what disappears continues to exist) and cause and effect (my actions have consequences).

Imagination and role-play

At around 18–24 months, cups become props for pretend play: children fill them, pour from them and offer «coffee» to their playmates. This open-ended creativity means that stackable cups are a toy that lasts far longer than a ‘single-use’ toy.
