The mirror: a surprisingly powerful tool for self-awareness

The mirror is one of the most popular developmental toys for newborns and infants — and for good reason. Baby is fascinated by the human face from birth, and their own reflection (which they initially perceive as «another baby») captivates them for minutes on end. Around 18 to 24 months, they will begin to understand that it is themselves they are seeing — this is known as the «mirror test», a major milestone in the development of self-awareness.

Why favour strong contrasts?

Newborns do not perceive colours like we do. For the first 3 to 4 months, their vision is limited to strong contrasts: black and white and red stand out particularly. It is for this reason that the models Black/White and Black/Red of our toy are particularly well suited to toddlers. The version Orange, softer, better suited for 4-6 months when vision is developing towards bright colours.

Choose the right colour for baby

• Black and White — the go-to option for 0-3 months. Maximum contrasts stimulate the developing eyesight.
• Black and Red — alternative to strong contrasts, perfect for 0-4 months. Red is one of the first colours perceived by a baby.
• Orange — a softer and warmer version, ideal from 3-4 months when baby starts to perceive the colour spectrum.

Tip: for newborns, you can alternate between Black/White and Black/Red to multiply visual stimulations. The Orange version becomes relevant around 4-6 months, when colour takes on its full dimension.
